Al J. Venter

Author Al J. Venter is a South African-born British national who is a sometime resident of Chinook, Washington, Scotland’s Isle of Bute, London as well as Cape Town. He has been a military correspondent for four decades and has had 35 books published.

Venter covered his first insurrection in Nigeria in 1965: the second army mutiny that overthrew the earlier Ibo-led putsch. He then reported on the war in what was still Portuguese-ruled Angola in 1967. Over decades he has reported on wars, civil insurrections, guerrilla conflicts, coup d’etats, army mutinies and other conflagrations on four continents and is still doing it.

Towards the end of the civil war in Sierra Leone a few years ago, he flew combat for five weeks with Neall Ellis, the South African mercenary gunship pilot. The two men - with side-gunner support at the rear - operated from an antiquated Russian Mi-24 helicopter gunship that leaked when it rained. That experience formed the basis of Venter’s book on mercenaries published recently and titled War Dog: Fighting Other Peoples Wars.

While still active as a journalist, Al Venter was a specialist writer for a number of publications in thestable of Britain’s Jane’s Information Group, including International Defence Review, Jane’s Islamic Affairs Analyst, Jane’s Defence Weekly, Jane’s International Police Review as well as Jane’s Intelligence Review.
